Histories written from the late 19th through the 20th centuries have been the basis of our understanding of the events surrounding General George Washington’s acclaimed crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas night, 1776. In the 21st century academic historians have continued to search the documentary record. In preparation for the nation’s Semiquincentennial, new groundbreaking research helps us clarify longstanding questions and identify the people who contributed to the crossing that night.
