In June 2025, PHMC announced the landmark transformation of the iconic mid-century modern State Museum building and the tower that formerly housed the State Archives. This $79.73 million project will be the largest and most comprehensive upgrade to the complex since it opened in 1964. From an engaging welcome experience to a new educational observation level at the 16th floor of the PHMC tower – this will be a museum designed for today’s audiences and tomorrow’s needs. The museum is expected to be closed from August 3, 2026, until early 2029.

This renovation project is designed to preserve and celebrate the building’s iconic mid-century modern architecture, while ensuring the facility can meet the expectations of 21st-century visitors. The building structure and galleries will remain largely intact, but with some significant and special changes informed by years of planning, including extensive public surveys and focus groups.

Additionally, the renovated museum will open with a new free welcome exhibit introducing visitors to the richness of Pennsylvania, as well as a newly designed Curiosity Connection to engage our youngest visitors.
This project will lay the groundwork for other considerable improvements to nearly half the standing galleries in the eight years following completion of this renovation.
