Planning for Tomorrow’s State Museum

For more than 120 years, The State Museum of Pennsylvania has celebrated the Commonwealth’s remarkable natural and cultural heritage – from its geology and wildlife to its arts and history.

Since its creation in 1905, the museum has evolved to preserve and interpret the stories that define Pennsylvania’s identity. When the current building opened in 1964, it represented the state’s largest-ever cultural investment and soon earned national recognition for its Modernist architecture, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, the museum continues that proud legacy with bold new chapter – a $79.73 million renovation and renewal project. This investment will enhance visitor experiences, modernize more than half of the gallery spaces, expand amenities, and ensure state-of-the-art care for the museum’s treasured collections.

To ensure these spaces serve our community for decades to come, this transformation is being guided by extensive public surveys and focus groups. By listening directly to you, we are preparing the museum to inspire and engage the next generation.

The Reimagined State Museum – Opening 2029

Known as the “Smithsonian of Pennsylvania,” The State Museum connects people to the stories, innovations and spirit that define our Commonwealth.

A redesigned lobby will feature a dynamic, free exhibit celebrating the many identities and voices that make Pennsylvania unique. Visitors can browse two new museum stores – one highlighting artisan crafts from across the state and another catering to children and families.

Spacious new elevators will guide guests to upper-level galleries, including a new changing exhibit space, and ultimately a stunning fifth-floor event venue perfect for community gatherings, celebrations, and cultural programs. The adjacent rooftop terrace will provide some of the most breathtaking views in the region.

Caring for the Commonwealth’s Treasures

Behind the scenes, the renovation will safeguard and preserve Pennsylvania’s collections for generations to come.

With the adjacent PHMC Tower newly transformed into state-of-the-art collection storage, artifacts will be protected under ideal environmental conditions. Advanced climate controls, fire detection and suppression systems, and modern storage solutions will keep Pennsylvania’s most precious objects secure and accessible for study and exhibition.
