Frequently Asked Questions

In June 2025, PHMC announced the upcoming $55 million transformation of the iconic mid-century modern State Museum building and the tower that formerly house the State Archives.

This project will be the largest and most comprehensive upgrade to the Museum since the complex opened in 1964. From an engaging welcome experience to a new educational observation level at the 16th floor of the PHMC tower – this will be a museum designed for today’s audiences and tomorrow’s needs. The museum is expected to be closed from August 2, 2026 until early 2029.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the museum open right now?

Yes, the museum remains open, until August 2, 2026.

Sunday, January 4, 2026, will be the last day to visit the third floor, including Natural History exhibits and the Planetarium, until after the renovation.

Visitors will continue to enjoy full access to our galleries on the first and second floors, including our new exhibit commemorating America’s 250th anniversary, Revolutionary Things.

Can my school group still visit the museum?

Groups are invited to visit the museum while it remains open. All 2026 group visits will receive discounted admission rates.

Groups are encouraged to pre-schedule their visits for spring 2026. Guided experiences are also available for groups.

What will happen to my State Museum Membership?

Starting in August 2025, our membership transitioned to a 6-month duration at a reduced rate. As the construction schedule solidifies, these 6-month memberships will be phased out and replaced by discounted supporter memberships which will remain active through the closure.

Why is the museum closing for renovation?
