Dr. Kurt Carr, Senior Curator of Archaeology at The State Museum, explains the importance of petroglyphs. This petroglyph is part of a group of seven rock islands, located just below the Safe Harbor Dam. On August 10, join Archaeology Curators in Nature Lab as they discuss where you can find petroglyphs in Pennsylvania.

The State Museum of Pennsylvania today announced its program schedule for August 2017:

StoryTime: Perfect Square by Michael HallFriday, August 4 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Join us for a tour of select works in the 50th Annual Art of the State exhibit to discover shapes in art. Enjoy our story, Perfect Square by Michael Hall, and take home a perfect square. StoryTime is our popular series for children 3-5 years. Each reading is held in a gallery and is followed by a related play activity or hands-on exploration of artifacts.

StoryTime is included with general admission.

Free Summer Fridays featuring Learn at Lunchtime

Fridays this summer at The State Museum will be free from June 16 through August 25. This program includes free general admission to the museum for the day and features Learn at Lunchtime programs from 12:15 PM to 12:45 PM highlighting a variety of engaging discussions and presentations.

Curiosity Connection will be free, with limited timed-tickets available for 45 minutes of play per hour from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Regular Planetarium admission rates apply.

Art Docents will also be available from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Fridays to give tours in Art of the State.

August 2017 Nature Lab

This summer, take a staycation to The State Museum of Pennsylvania where you’ll discover interactive, hands-on learning experiences guided by specialists in fields ranging from archaeology to environmental protection. Museum curators and representatives of various Pennsylvania State agencies will engage in live educational presentations as they lead visitors of all ages through the rich natural world of Pennsylvania. This program starts at 11:30 AM on Wednesdays and Thursdays, June 21 through August 24.

Join us at 2:00 PM to explore the 50th annual Art of the State exhibition with artist Michael Brolly as he and Collections Advancement Project Curator Carol Buck co-lead a casual tour sharing their insights on the show.  Mr. Brolly won both first prize for craft and the Art Docents’ Choice Award for his Homage to My Mother.

3rd in the Burg: Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, Friday, August 18, 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM
Join us for the third event in a special summer series in conjunction with 3rd in the Burg, Harrisburg’s monthly celebration of art and culture. Enjoy refreshments and interact with members of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. The State Museum is free during the hours of the event.

Special Planetarium Show:  Eclipse Across America (Grade 4 & Up) August 9 – August 20
Learn about the August 21 solar eclipse before it happens. What is an eclipse? How are they created? What are the different types of eclipses? Discover where you can observe this summer’s eclipse.
